Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation Helps Provide 2,460 Meals to Children in Need Through The Salvation Army’s “Better Together” Program

PITTSBURGH, PA (March 30, 2020) – In efforts to meet increased demand for food while also supporting the restaurant industry, the Penguins Foundation has partnered with The Salvation Army to serve over 2,460 Subway sandwiches to children in need. Within days of the COVID-19 outbreak, The Salvation Army in Beaver County rapidly restructured how they serve those in need, partnering with the school district to deliver lunches to children impacted by school closures.

“The volume of food we’re preparing is taking a toll on our staff and volunteers who are working long hours under high demand for service. This donation from the Penguins Foundation helps relieve our invaluable helpers and maintain everyone’s health and safety,” said Major Evelyn Hopping, Beaver County Coordinator at The Salvation Army. "We were all brought to our knees and confronted with just how vital our most basic necessities – like daily meals – really are. Unfortunately, there is no quarantine from hunger."=

Ensuring the safety of those who depend on The Salvation Army’s programs and services, along with the safety of staff and volunteers, is of utmost priority. Through The Salvation Army’s “Better Together” program, corporations and individuals can help feed families in need while also supporting the restaurant industry, which has been tremendously impacted in recent weeks.

The Penguins Foundation’s donation came from funds raised through an online jersey auction. "We want to thank our fans for once again coming through to assist residents of our community who are in need at this difficult time," said Jim Britt, Executive Director of the Penguins Foundation.
