The Salvation Army Deploys Allegheny County Emergency Disaster Personnel to Aid Puerto Rico Earthquake Victims

January 16, 2020 (PITTSBURGH, PA) – In the aftermath of a series of deadly earthquakes, The Salvation Army is mobilizing disaster relief teams across the island of Puerto Rico to help those in need.  Three trained disaster staff personnel have been deployed to several locations to provide food, hydration, clean-up kits, hygiene supplies, and emotional and spiritual care to first responders and survivors. Due to the frequency of the continuing aftershocks, more than 40,000 persons are voluntarily displaced and sleeping in the streets due to fears of collapse.

The Western Pennsylvania Emergency Disaster Services Division sent 17 pallets of supplies to the affected areas this week, which included 1,303 cots, 568 blankets and diapers. There are a total of 110 Salvation Army volunteers and staff from across the country currently deployed, including personnel from the Western PA Emergency Disaster Services team who will be assuming the role of Incident Commander during their deployment.

“Response efforts to these catastrophic events will be costly and can last for years,” said Michael Riemer, Emergency Disaster Services Regional Director at The Salvation Army of Western Pennsylvania. “With generous public support, The Salvation Army will be here to help the thousands affected by the earthquake for as long as they’re in need.”

Donations are being accepted online at helpsalvationarmy.org or by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY. All donations will be used in support of those affected by the earthquake.
