Giant Eagles Saves Salvation Army Christmas Campaign, Extends Red Kettles through New Year’s Eve

PITTSBURGH, PA (December 23, 2019) – Giant Eagle has come to save The Salvation Army’s Christmas fundraising campaign by allowing red kettles at their stores through Dec. 31, an entire week longer than planned. Due to the short holiday season and an increase in online shopping, The Salvation Army is significantly behind in fundraising compared to this time last year. This additional week of fundraising will help them reach their goal of $2.4M in Western Pennsylvania and $647K in Allegheny County.

“We are beyond thankful that Giant Eagle has stepped in to save our annual red kettle campaign. It’s been a difficult year and during a time of great distress, they took action as a devoted corporate partner to help us reach our goal. This will allow us to provide help to our neighbors who come to us for assistance, often at a time of crisis in their lives with nowhere else to turn,” said Major Raphael Jackson, Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army Western Pennsylvania Division.

Giant Eagle is The Salvation Army’s 2nd largest Red Kettle location in the Western Pennsylvania division. Their partnership goes back to the early 90s and help raise a half a million dollars annually. Giant Eagle is a growing family of approximately 32,000 team members that care deeply for one another, their customers, and their communities.

“The Salvation Army has been a long-standing Giant Eagle partner, and we thank our Team Members and customers for their amazing generosity in continuing to support this important cause,” said Dan Donovan, Giant Eagle spokesperson.

The general public can help by donating cash at a Giant Eagle red kettle, donating with apple pay or google pay at a red kettle, or donating online at www.salvationarmywpa.org/donate.

Now in its 129th year, The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign is one of the oldest and largest charitable campaigns in the world. The money raised during the holidays help support the services provided by The Salvation Army year-round.  Every community across the Division provides general social services to families in their communities who are in need of food, clothing, housing assistance, emergency disaster needs and much more.
