The Salvation Army of Indiana, PA Opens Choice Food Pantry for Those in Need

February 4, 2020 (INDIANA, PA) – The Salvation Army clients struggling to make ends meet now have more options to pick out the food they want for their family. Previously, people would receive the same bag of food week after week and now the new program allows volunteers and clients to go pick out food together to better serve the needs of the community.

"For many years everything in our food pantry was pre-packed and every family depending on their size would get the same number of items. What we found is most folks don’t eat the same thing and wouldn’t eat all the food we provided them," said Captain Denise Martin, Commanding Officer at The Salvation Army of Indiana. "We came to the decision that we had to make a change and the best way to serve the community is with a choice pantry."

In 2019, The Salvation Army of Indiana served 5,115 meals and 861 bags of groceries to those in need. They hope the new choice food pantry will better help those in need in 2020. In addition to food assistance, they offer comprehensive social services including case-managed support for clothing, rent & utility assistance, youth programs, Christmas assistance, back to school supplies and much more for those struggling to make ends meet in the Indiana community.

The pantry is now open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. and has been moved from the back of the building to the front where the pantry is easily accessible for all.

The Salvation Army is seeking monetary donations, food donations and volunteers to help in the choice food pantry, please contact 724-465-2530 for more information.
